Desk shopping

As I log more and more hours in front of my computer these days (“Dear clients: I heart you 4+EVA. Bunnies, Ethan”), I find that my working environment isn’t quite cutting it. While I’m not ready to begin a Cederholmian search for a proper office, I’m in desperate need of some new office furniture. After a few hours of cursing my lack of formal design training staring at Photoshop or screaming at IE working on some CSS, I can really feel the strain of sitting in one spot for an extended period of time.

The first person to sarcastically mutter poor baby gets a boot to the hard drive.

And being the space cadet that I am, I’m not especially good at remembering the need to take regular breaks—therefore, it’d be nice to have a space that was a bit more conducive to too-long stretches in a chair. Given that my prior furniture purchases have led to an office aesthetic that could be summed up as “nouveau dormitory”, I think I require a bit of help with this one. Ideally, I’d get a desk that was conducive to long hauls moving the mouse around in a futile attempt to Make Things Pretty, as well as a chair to match.

So then, my question’s this: do any of the three of you have any solid recommendations for smart, comfortable office furniture? Additionally, what should I be careful of when shopping?

(Recommendations to check out Ikea will likely be met with umlaut-ridden taunts. You have been warned.)
