I’m not in a very Zen place right now.
For the past day I’ve been absolutely, well, ripped about the RIAA’s lawsuit against, and subsequent settlement with, Brianna Lahara — a 12 year-old girl living in a NYC Housing Authority apartment who thought she was downloading music legally because her mom bought a $29 dollar Kazaa license. I’m honestly having a very hard time articulating just how angry this makes me — I’m sure others have done just fine, though.
But on the other hand, this is exactly what we need. We need the RIAA to screw up repeatedly — subpoena a senator’s child, find their ass in another bout of congressional hearings. But until these lawsuits stop, we really should get off our collective duffs and do something. As Todd Dominey said, I’d like to put my money where my mouth is; I’m planning on sending a donation to Brianna and (if it turns out to be legitimate) contributing to the United File Sharing Defense Fund. I’m also going to start screening all prospective Amazon purchases through RIAA Radar.
We may need the RIAA to make these sorts of mistakes, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to be happy about them. If this sort of thing continues, I’m going to get angrier. You should too.
