Two rooms and two states to my left, she’s sleeping now. A low hush falls over the rooms she’s in, as The Shins strum indifferently, quietly on the stereos beside her. As the mix CDs that I made her gradually wind down, I’m all too aware of the walls and state lines between us. They’ve been there for years, but for some reason they’ve never felt quite so present as they do right now.
In my room, my four walls of one, the heater hisses as I huddle over my laptop. The glow from the screen is the only light in the room, and I’d give near anything to have her—either, really—come into the room, remind me that there’s someone else awake at this hour. Yet there she stays, two rooms and two states to my left. I sip my coffee, and I can almost see her: she’s there, sleeping, with every flower of a thousand hues. The stereos click off for her—both, really—and I turn back to my work.
